Embarking on Milton

I remember reading it in college. I remember it being difficult and transformative but I don't remember much else, so here we go. Milton's Paradise Lost in a nice trade paperback edition that might not make me look too much like a freak if caught reading it in public. Mostly I'm curious about what a 17th century writer like him has to offer the modern lay reader like me. for this reason I have determined (truth be told my schedule of work, mothering and housekeeping decided for me) that I will just read it with only the front notes, annotations and Wikipedia entry as study aids.

This book is excerpted from The Complete Poetry and Essential Prose of John Milton (Modern Library). I include this link as it's the one with the most thorough and interesting reviews of this most recent annotation of Milton's work.
